Chit (一票 in Chinese) is a free app for splitting a shopping receipt with the people you shared it with. You take a photo of the receipt, Chit reads every line on your phone, you tap who had what, and everyone on the receipt can see the original photo and confirm their share. It’s made in the UK for flatmates, couples, friends on a trip, and anyone who does a shared shop. Chit is coming soon to the App Store and Google Play.
Who Chit is for
If you split bills with flatmates, share a weekly shop with a partner, or keep a running tab with friends on holiday, you’ve probably done this by hand: typing a long supermarket receipt into a spreadsheet, or posting a photo in the group chat and doing sums under it. Splitting evenly is easy. It gets harder when one person doesn’t drink, someone bought their own shampoo, and a multibuy saving covers two items that belong to different people.
Chit is built for that kind of receipt. It works for one person too: because every line is recorded, you can see what you spend on what, and how prices at your usual shop change over time.
How it works: snap, read, split, confirm, settle
- Snap. Point your camera at the receipt. Chit tells you what to fix (move closer, hold still, avoid the glare) and takes the photo itself when the picture is good enough. A long receipt can be taken in overlapping sections. You can also import photos from your gallery.
- Read. Each line is read on the phone, with no upload. Short receipt codes such as
WHL MLK 4PTbecome readable names like “whole milk, 4 pints”. Discounts, multibuys and weighed items are attached to the right product. Chit adds the lines up against the printed total and, if they don’t match, shows you which lines to check. - Split. Split the whole receipt evenly, split a receipt by item, or give someone a set amount. Tap one person to give them a line, tap several to share it. Shares such as 2:1 are a long press away. Everything is worked out in whole pence, and the odd penny goes to a visible place, not a hidden one.
- Confirm. Send the receipt to the people on it. Each of them sees the original photo and every line, then confirms their share or comments on the one line that isn’t right. If an amount changes after someone has confirmed, they’re asked to confirm again.
- Settle. Chit keeps a running balance with each person. When someone pays you back, you record it, or mark a whole receipt as settled. Chit never handles money: you pay each other however you normally do, and Chit keeps the record.
What makes Chit different
It works line by line
Most bill-splitting apps work with a single amount: “£43.20, split three ways”. Chit works with each line of the receipt. That’s what lets it split by item, carry discounts with the product they belong to, and share bag and service charges in proportion to what each person had.
Everyone sees the same receipt
Arguments about money usually start with “I think you’ve got that wrong”. In Chit, everyone on a receipt sees the same photo, the same lines and the same split, and there’s a history of who changed what. Agreement is something each person gives, not something one person assumes.
Friends don’t need the app
You can add someone with just a name. When you want to tell them what they owe, Chit makes a share image showing only their part, which you can send through any chat app. If they sign up later, you link them and they can see the receipts you send them.
Private by design
- Receipts are read on your phone, using Apple’s and Google’s built-in text recognition. It works offline.
- You don’t need an account. Without one, everything stays on your phone.
- An account is free and optional. You need it to send receipts to other people and to sync between devices. Photos are uploaded only for receipts you send.
- Card numbers are cut down to their last four digits in the recognised text.

What Chit costs
Scanning, splitting, sharing, confirming and the spending and price views are free, and the people you split with never pay to see, confirm or comment. An optional paid AI assistant is planned for heavier use; the basics will never depend on it.
The guides
Each part of Chit has its own guide:
- Scanning receipts on your phone: live guidance, long receipts, abbreviations and the total check.
- Splitting a receipt by item: even splits, shares, set amounts, and how pennies are rounded.
- Everyone confirms their share: sending a receipt, comments, edit permissions and change history.
- Share cards for friends without the app: placeholder contacts and share images.
- Price tracking and spending: price trends, your basket index, monthly spending and photo management.
