Chit vs Splitwise: which suits splitting receipts?

Published

If you’re looking for a Splitwise alternative, the honest answer is that it depends on what you split. Splitwise is a mature, well-known app for keeping a running tab across a group: rent, bills, trips and nights out, with balances, debt simplification, currency conversion and a web version. Chit is a new app, not yet released, that does one narrower job: splitting a long shopping receipt line by line, read on your phone, with everyone checking the original. This page compares the two as fairly as we can. Facts about Splitwise were checked on 25 October 2026 from its own website, help centre and UK App Store listing.

Where Splitwise is the better choice

Splitwise is built for an ongoing tab between many people, and it does that well.

If your group mostly logs single amounts and wants one place for every shared cost, Splitwise is likely the better fit.

Where Chit fits better

Chit is designed for the shared shop: a supermarket receipt with thirty lines, where splitting evenly isn’t fair and typing it in by hand is the slow part.

On privacy, the two work differently. Splitwise, Inc. is based in the US and says it processes data in the US and other countries; its privacy policy lists receipt scanning and OCR services among its vendors. In Chit, receipts are read on the phone, and without an account nothing leaves it. With an account, data is stored on a server in London and a receipt’s photos are uploaded only when you send that receipt to others. See the privacy policy.

Can you use both?

Yes, and for some households that’s the most practical setup. Use Chit to split the weekly shop line by line and agree who had what, then add each person’s total to your Splitwise group as a single expense, alongside rent and bills. Splitwise keeps the overall tab and simplifies the payments; Chit handles the receipt detail that a single amount can’t show.
